Plant of the Month – June – Hydrangea

We have chosen the Hydrangea as June’s plant of the month for it’s big showy blooms that will return year after year with the right care.

Characteristics

This early spring to summer flowering shrub is easy to grow and puts on a dazzling display of colour in your borders or pots. They mainly flower in shades of white, pink and blue including all shades of lavender to violet to purple and even green. They can also indicate the type of soil in your garden! Acid soils tend to produce blue flowers whilst alkaline soils produce pink.

Care

Hydrangeas get their name from the Greek word hydra – and true to their name, they do like to be watered! They are quite low maintenance, mostly preferring partial sun with afternoon shade although some varieties are more tolerant to full sun. They thrive in fertile, well draining soil that receive plenty of moisture. Compost or aged manure will help with their growth.

We have plenty of varieties in stock – just coming into bloom. Prices start at £15.99 depending on variety and size of plant.
