Plant of the Month – November – Camellia

These beautiful and fairly hardy plants with their glossy leaves and showy blooms are a huge hit with gardeners as they can be grown well in both borders and containers alike. The Camellia flowers in autumn, winter and early spring and there are hundreds of varieties to choose from.

Characteristics

With flowers of white, pink or red, these beautiful plants give a bright display of colour in the colder months of the year. These popular evergreen shrubs are usually 1.5m tall when fully grown but have been known to grow much taller in perfect conditions! Their stunning flowers can be single or double and an incredibly glamourous choice for your garden!

Care

In their native South Asia, Camellias are often found in woodland areas which makes them perfect for growing in the shadier parts of your garden. They enjoy an acidic soil so if your garden is not quite right, plant in pots and containers for great results. These plants enjoy well-drained spots and are best planted in the autumn whilst the soil is still warm enough for roots to become established before the winter temperatures drop. Prune after flowering if needed and feed in spring. During the summer months, these plants are busy producing the next year’s flower buds so ensure they are kept well-watered.
