Plant of the Month – September – Sedum

Sedums are absolutely loved by bees and other pollinators! And this month, they are showing their beautiful bright pink, white or crimson flowers in abundance.

Characteristics

Sedums, or to give them their proper name, Hylotelephium, have upright stems and colourful succulent leaves. With masses of long lasting flat-headed flowers in late summer and autumn, they are a very popular plant for borders and pots alike.

Plants die back in winter and reappear in early spring but with their fleshy grey-green or even purple leaves, they provide colour to the garden even when not in flower.

Care

These herbaceous perennials are very low maintenance plants and extremely drought resistant needing very little care. Perfect for chalky/alkaline soils that are well drained, Sedums flourish in sunny spots. Extremely hardy, Sedums can withstand temperatures as low as minus 20 and will even survive in particularly windy spots!

Plant in spring or early autumn, towards the front of your borders and cut back flowerheads in February and March, adding mulch around the base. Often stems can splay outward from the plant centre so it is worth shortening them by half in May to keep the shape.

We have many varieties now in stock including Sunsparkler Lime Zinger, Brilliant, Pina Colada, Cloudwalker, Stardust, Pink Whisper, Rose Carpet and Dark Magic. 2l pots are £9.99.
